Control Retrofits for Blow Molding Processes

MACO Compact

macocompact1The Eurotherm / Barber Colman MACO Compact is a cost competitive general-purpose programmable logic controller with the advantages of integrated, total machine control in a compact package. It is an expandable system, similar to the industry standard Eurotherm / Barber Colman MACO 6500, but designed for lower cost without sacrificing high-tech performance.

The Eurotherm / Barber Colman MACO Compact for Blow Molding includes multi-processor control.  Multi-processors allow specific attention to each critical aspect of the machine’s control.  The sequence RLD is scanned in the sub-millisecond range.  Progressive Controls & Automation LLC personnel have witnessed repeatable open loop clamp control to within 1 millimeter.  Two Analog Digital Signal Processing Units (APUs), which reside on the “Compact” main processing circuit board, allow for RLD scan updates of around 500 micro-seconds (0.0005 seconds).  High resolution analog inputs & outputs (16 bit resolution) allow accurate and precise readings of analog inputs and very accurate analog output signals to proportional and servo control valves.

Parison tooling (and accumulator push-out) position is scanned and the proper output signal is updated every 100 micro-seconds (that’s 0.0001 seconds!).  Since the responose of typical proportional valves is 20 to 30 milli-seconds, the MACO Compact continually insures that the proper output is sent to the control valve.  This super fast scan results in a consistent and repeatable machine response.

Precise adaptive automatic tuning is included for temperature control.

There are 4 security levels.  Each screen has a security level programmed.  Each setpoint on the screen also has an independent security level.  The screens can be programmed to allow complete viewing and changing of setpoints/swtitches, viewing only of setpoint/switches or no access to each individual screen.  Each security level has the capability of up to 40 unique user identification codes.  Each operator can login under an individual user ID and the changes that an operator makes, to any setpoint on any screen, is automatically logged into a Setpoint Change Log screen.  The Setpoint Change Log screen date & time stamps the changed setpoint.  The original value and the new value of the setpoint is also logged.  These changes are also stamped with the operators actual ID number.  This helps identify possible reasons for process variations that otherwise might go undetected.

Control rack configurations can have either 4, 6 or 8 slots for machine control inputs & outputs.  These optional rack sizes allow the system to be tailored to the machine’s I/O requirements.  Up to 3 control racks can be networked for additional I/O requirements.  Power supply requirements are 24 VDC (externally supplied).

Statistical Process Control (SPC)is an available  option.  This feature allows for up to 10 different process values or setpoints to be logged on a selectable time interval.  Each parameter can be either time or event based triggered.  Sample size ,  time between readings, time between sample groups, upper & lower specified limits are user selectable.   X-Bar, Range, and Histogram charts are displayed for each vaue.  Standard calculations such as X-Bar, X-Bar-Bar, Range & Cpk are automatic & readily available.

Easy and compact.  Pre-engineered for easy installation and machine run-off.  Progressive Controls & Automation LLC can provide professional grade control upgrade installation complete with detailed electrical schematics or choose to install yourself.  Call today for more information and a detailed quotation.

MACO Alpha (6500 series)

The industry standard MACO Alpha series (MACO 6000 & 6500 by Barber Colman / Eurotherm) has been faithfully serving the blow molding industry since 1994.  The MACO Alpha has been credited with world class parison & temperature control algorithms.

macoalphamonitorThe 640 x 480 10.4″ displayoffers greater resolution than the preceding Barber Colman MACO 8000 and allows more information to be displayed on each screen (page).  This greater resolution allows fewer total screens that operators and setup personnel need.  This reduction in total screen number allows quicker setup of different part runs.  The display comes with a standard cartridge port & an optional floppy disk, as well as internal memory, that allow storage of several different product recipes.  Six quick access membrane screen path buttons (located just below the display screen) help to make screen pathing simplified.  There is also a “Go to Screen” feature that allows operators to enter the desired screen number and immediately be pathed to that specific screen.
